From 2011, James was based in Hong Kong with HSBC Global Asset Management where he held the positions of Global Head of Trading and Head of Trading Asia-Pacific. He was responsible for the management and oversight of the trading function working closely with the portfolio managers and traders to maximise the effectiveness of trade implementation across all asset classes.

James commenced his career as a designated trading representative (DTR) in Melbourne, then Sydney, trading Australian equities with ABN AMRO. Other significant positions include Head of Dealing at AMP Capital Investors and Institutional Sales Trader at ITG. James holds a Bachelor of Economics (Honours) from La Trobe University and has attended Columbia Business School.
